I really like how it turned out, although it is a bit heavy for an almost sleeveless knit. I wish that it had been done on a finer gauge yarn. Here are my notes:

Yarn: Classic Elite Rockford Cotton. This is an Egyptian cotton yarn that is currently discontinued. My mother found this for me at a yard sale in Massachusetts. I had enough of the eggplant color to finish this top with about 6 yards to spare. It was meant to be, me thinks.

Pattern: "The Slink" by Jennifer Stafford, found in the book DomiKNITrix: Whip your knitting into shape. Great pattern, almost no mistakes that weren't corrected on the website (I did find a misprint on the schematic, but I emailed Jennifer about it. She was very sweet and even sent me a free t-shirt for my trouble. Totally not necessary, but very sweet).

Pattern Notes: The top is cast on using a provisional cast on, knit sideways around the body, shaping for the armholes and neckline and then the provisional c/o is removed and the sweater is "seamed" using kitchener stitch. Can I just say right now that I had never used kitchener stitch before. The result isn't the neatest looking seam in the world, but it is hidden by my arm, and my SNB girls assure me that it is barely noticeable. If it bugs me too much, I may take it out and re-do it. I love that I have that option.
The sideways knitting proves a unique challenge. More than ever before, my ROW gauge was more important that my STITCH gauge. The wonderful thing about this pattern is that for the very first set of sized repeats, Jennifer gives a measurement of how long your piece should be. VERY helpful, because while my stitch gauge was dead on, my row gauge was apparently off a LOT, and while I was attempting to make one of the larger sizes, I realized that due to my row gauge issues, I would have to use the smallest size for all the length repeats. Turns out that it fits perfectly, so I must have done something right.
Finally, what I love about this pattern is the leeway that is given. You can make a cropped top or a tunic length, the neckline can be plunging, revealing or modest. Jennifer is very specific about where to add or subtract from the pattern to make the top all your own.

I must say the most gratifying thing ever was putting the book with the pattern on the shelf after I was completely finished with the top. As this was my very first large wearable FO, I'm proud and happy!Kristy Knitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00706883904783950629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4509858118747977659.post-7705405605620013302007-05-30T08:01:00.000-07:002007-05-30T14:14:47.341-07:00Slink ProgressI swear the Slink is so close to being done I can taste it. I've worked on The Slink basically nonstop for the past couple of days. I was starting to think my knitting mojo was gone for good. Expect finished pictures of The Slink soon, at the rate I'm going!Kristy Knitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00706883904783950629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4509858118747977659.post-60612370407218879492007-05-02T10:39:00.000-07:002008-12-09T08:38:04.444-08:00No Knitting!I haven't posted in so long because I haven't been knitting lately, I've been sewing! I'm actually still working on The Slink, but it is kind of slow going, so I'm working on sewing projects as well.

Here is my very first sewn garment, which I made a couple of weeks ago:

After that, I was on a roll. Here is my second skirt:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLaefh6deZuKXDnJJcBbfL0_218sREio6yC_yuv98DGNiC2w2BabX1YL9BIU8p-rymWiHa2kD_rnF-owMZ9goOs-eDXSnXJFYwwzV_Ayyisn-NXIMMZkxKQ56cC2a5KHNfMlsT1HWpOAM/s400/DSCF3566.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060020897545960146" />

This one is a bit shorter, and a bit better made. I'm really pleased with it.

This is sort of a work in progress. It is half a dress. I plan on doing a back stitch all around the top of it and then knitting the bodice. This might take a while, because I'm not knitting on anything except the Slink right now.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTWKb0fv8NoZ7unLjrDH9qApAhEMlRNnfONAExNjIO2LRMf8l49-l0SjQcf3xrVUrRU5_wRqc_X4LiwkYdLeXkB_42spEC7BfIsmMBLZlMnbShpXFQUk3HqFTLQLLBAmqb1xaNaBKiB9c/s400/DSCF3567.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060021692114909922" />

Also, I'm working on a graduation gift for my friend, Leanna, who is about to graduate from Marshall with her BS in Biology...a t-shirt quilt!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglWqKw0tNVIQ3bvw8JhoehGuZAPR07SlDyDQHD0ZSZ_LNh7uE3bM3DSMPo6kbCEU_i_XUr9ByS-j4ZkoCzkNPZl3KRXTeYXq3QiJE0RjzmObrxC2jJbecYdLzWhzL-nxAXDVuWSdcnw38/s400/DSCF3568.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060022349244906226" />

And finally, I've been looking at this style of dress for a long time now, and I finally broke down and bought a pattern for one (a pattern!). I have worked from a pattern before, but I'm not great at it. We'll see how this goes.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuPugD6Ixkv9TutMfhPZFuEkk5lcs0Ys13l0aoSmb93Im5ZvA2OM56EfRFBhYmKn4PzXQXibjUnLCl-WxYoudTpQsloThSIl34EKgh65BE4IPAPtZjLdqRFl5TXT3GjX9ZZ_Kds4hGdRc/s400/DSCF3569.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5060023208238365442" />

The dress on the far right is the one I'm making. The black fabric is for the main part, and the white is for the trim. The best part? The black fabric has white outlines of kitties and the white fabric says "meow" all over it. I think it is going to be SO cute! I bought a bit extra of the white fabric because I think I'm going to add white trim to the bottom. So, as soon as I'm done with my spring cleaning (I'm donating OVER HALF of my clothes to goodwill today!), my reward is that I get to work on my dress. Yeah, so I'm going to get back to work.Kristy Knitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00706883904783950629noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4509858118747977659.post-12690306165513561492007-04-14T14:29:00.000-07:002008-12-09T08:38:05.031-08:00Slinky SlinkThe slink is coming along fine! I looove my Central Park Hoodie...and I'm getting quite far on it. HOWEVER, with the new warm weather, I've started getting a little tired of knitting this big woolen cardigan that I can't wear for at least six months. Because of that, I've put it aside for a while. I will absolutely finish it -- there isn't a doubt in my head, but I really wanted to start on something that I can wear this summer.

So, I realized that I still had this gem in my stash:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdkiW52ndHD2f9L-b3up6QQ98VbJsKDLY9nos-OGERU0N7F88MzdA0EP-P7BqNisQRdhJuVG_UJFA9pQw1cIDgW0j5097sXXWo0B8aNgKUr5D8OtCXM7Z-VX9KdR-bjP2gSG-6v2fGPh0/s400/rocklandcotton.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053397934792704946" />

..this is a 100% Egyptian cotton yarn by Classic Elite. It has since been discontinued, but I have about 900 yards of it. The best part? The yarn was 100% free to me. My mom got it while yard-sale'ing with my Aunt Mabel in Boston. I have a bunch of it, actually, but the most I have in one single color is in this pretty purple. The color is actually much deeper than it looks in this picture. Anyhoo -- I decided that I definitely had enough for a summer top.

What pattern did I decide on? Well, if you recall, I recently purchased the book DomiKNITrix: Whip your knitting into shape by Jennifer Stafford. While flipping through, I found this:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlpGcA4m0qOFlvL5qQWtqIC9owpZtV4T1q45JoPQxv79lgfmXSzYTSrSJ8N3_OzbD7ro5FAi0rXJB_cKsXBrLvVGBxQ1C7s5yPRC3Coc4pihBseEoHHwTYn9iDZVmhsgP6p45brmRFfiA/s400/slink2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053398377174336450" />

(sorry about the poor picture quality -- this book doesn't photograph well, I think because of the matte pages)

...and it is PERFECT. I got gauge on size 8's, and I immediately began. I must say that I LOVE this pattern...It is knit sideways, beginning from the armpit and knitting over to the other armpit. The cast on is provisional (I started with a crochet chain), so after I finish to the left front, I will rip out the crochet chain and knit in the other direction to finish the sweater off. The pattern also has that great waist detailing which is incredibly slimming (who couldn't use some slimming). What I really love is that Jennifer Stafford has built a little leeway into the pattern -- I can make the v-neck as deep as I want, for example.

I'm just so excited. I'll leave you with a picture of my kitties, enjoying their new bed, purchased from Ikea for $5!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4e-u-IIir4IeBMEfdxayNe2Ps-NaRGl3U8VCq1QytKBBNDGW4Qjj5NYHZd6PtQRpsVTxbTmXhI2zwOGSHFBPUGNFhp_jbDQfEzGITg0Ag0KRs7QNUAZmDoOHmXr0a3m2KoJTUgtxbtYw/s400/catinabasket.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053398574742832082" />Kristy Knitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00706883904783950629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4509858118747977659.post-79979996466927206012007-04-14T14:22:00.001-07:002007-04-14T14:22:49.192-07:00This makes me embarrassed to be a knitter:Kristy Knitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00706883904783950629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4509858118747977659.post-6571897694535316792007-04-14T14:14:00.000-07:002008-12-09T08:38:06.272-08:00It's Haturday!(Originally posted on Feb 10, 2007)
Between now and this time last week, I've made 3 hats. The first was the felted cloche as seen in my last post, the second looks like this:

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXe05Q7emFx42bEMJ6lngMa48CGUihfiQ9Eb-3SRFLeDYzIRz-D1zpCyOy9ZRLIWesI4oIyrtLta59dx0oVsat9s-JB9GXJnGrX18GDTqbP1xjUvoJ4_EiHnQzWSJEReROld64xROgwVs/s400/DSCF3153.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053395525316051858" />

This one is not so good. I made it too big. I didn't realize this until it was too late. You see, what happened was that I cast on enough stitches for a me-sized hat on size 8 needles. About 5 inches in, I realized that I was in fact using size 9 needles. Oops. So, I ended up making it too short because I was too lazy to frog the whole thing and start over. Not to mention, I have two poorly placed stripes of color because of this. So, I have a too short, too wide funny looking hat. Ho hum.

So, I wanted to make a nice hat. That is where this:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMPEGu22fbktjhz5TekJbvGN4G5uBT0841ryf65p9E9nWkeggHoZZ2iO2CouMhMcJqzyy2dmW15mKHRd6VgsBwCeerMdHkNFU2fG8beVvlTwxzuSdBFJ8knjO94_BJVilXTPMHJ8auVTc/s400/DSCF3151.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053395834553697186" />

hat comes in. This is a pithy hat based (incredibly loosely) on this pattern: http://www.littleturtleknits.com/pithyhat.htm -- the red hat, not the green one. This hat turned out very, very nicely. In case anyone is wondering what I did:

Size 8 needles 16" circs, Paton's Classic Wool

I c/o 78 stitches, knit about an inch in k2p2 rib and then increased every 3rd stitch (by kfb of every 3rd stitch), to get 104 stitches. Then, I knit straight for about 8 inches. For the decreases, I k2tog across the row, knit two rows straight and then I repeated that. Finally, I pulled the yarn through all my stitches, cinched the top and weaved in my ends.
So, all in all, I think Haturday turned out to be a success. Now, I just need to find a girl that has a very big but very short head to give that first hat to.

EDIT: I just realized that my pithy hat looks very small in the picture. Just for reference, I have it pushed back so that there is that bunchy effect in the back. I can also pull it down to cover my forehead and earlobes if it gets VERY cold.Kristy Knitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00706883904783950629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4509858118747977659.post-65049165341932034212007-04-14T14:08:00.000-07:002007-04-14T14:13:57.174-07:00Happy SnowDay!(originally posted on Feb. 6 on Vox)
The snow is coming down, and I'm finally home for the day. I got: Naughty Needles by: Nikol Lohr. This is a very cute book to have in my library. Even if I don't make anything from it (which I will, I think), it is very nI'ice. I like this one better than Sexy Little Knits because everything in that book is made for little waifs. Which I am not.

Domiknitrix: Whip your knitting into shape by: Jennifer Stafford. This book is just gorgeous. There are some great patterns, and some more advanced techniques outlined, unlike most other books that only cover the basics. I hate to be a vain knitter, but damn, this book just looks good. From the pleather binding to the gloriously un-glossy pages, I just adore flipping through this book. Isn't that what knitting books are all about, anyway?
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7CPdpgOdOl0STKEspWV881aTr3oWtlWyFJND4-yfPyidmhxippqoTEl7kyrEbXHx6Ru0CI8_Q879cmxQkY7VAfH_TA3EmCaJ6fYQlACFwCJq7YLyK-8N209lS-RSnTWK7QavtIrSqtlo/s320/DSCF3095.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053392630508094322" />

Anyway, the only complaint I have about this book is that the final pattern, "Elfin Bride + Gothlet" isn't actually in the book. You have to email her and then she will email you when it is available (it isn't yet). In the book she says it is because of "time and space constraints". I assume that meant the pattern wasn't ready yet. The sweater itself is alright looking. She claims that if you attempt and finish this pattern, "you've demonstrated mastery of this craft." Which just rubs me the wrong way. I think it presumptious to assume that your pattern is the do-all end-all of difficult knitting. And it doesn't even look that difficult. Of course, that is coming from me, so whatever.

Oh, I almost forgot the last book: The Knitter's handy book of sweater patterns, which is really just more of a construction book. I was just looking for something that was going to explain how different kinds of sweaters were put together so I can start designing. We'll see though. I wish I had gotten an EZ book instead.

In other news, I finished the hat to go with the baby sweater. It is very cute and looks good with the sweater. It is seen to the right, modeled by Perfect Baby Computer.
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEif749Jq_fTknG1OgMFGyupEeBwX9017DDMaIpb1aQmzcexfix5ZqRRQnuYV0uWP5fISNLzBeHV6mLT9IFiA0dl8VGqCCVUKCCZH50EGgxIJStblZ-aDwqAT8VNkEGloqLhiwyst7eY6H4/s400/DSCF3097.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053393206033712002" />

And, finally, you will notice the current issue of Knit It! and Knitscene (yay Knitscene -- I'm still under the impression that this magazine should automatically be included with my IK subscription, but oh well). I really like the tank on the cover of the Knit It!, but not in the colors shown.

Keep Knitting!

KristyKristy Knitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00706883904783950629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4509858118747977659.post-19974641572088033002007-04-14T13:56:00.000-07:002008-12-09T08:38:07.071-08:00Oh, Baby!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTNmzqC6inJ9JCdB7osQJYWSbl6adt_eIyajCtEPY4jehyCOPiFg3A7q5HUN0WKdBOfY7ofXkFbK1eP8cHL0zqVcjlDiRjH4jjFVTNAJA9w2Amntxx4v1pWSrisr50oKMWUerkAaiD8tU/s320/DSCF3091.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5053391041370194770" />
I'm knitting baby sets! My cousin, Becky and my SO's aunt and uncle, Chimi and John, are having babies! Becky is having a girl and Chimi is having a boy. So, fun for me, I get to knit both blue and pink. I've never knit for babies before, so I'm going with the basic blue/pink this time around. Perhaps when the babies are a little older, I'll get creative with the colors.

This sweater was knit using two strands of a baby yarn (fingering/sport weight) held together, on size 10.5 straight needles. The back is a basic rectangle and the front is two rectangles, each half the size of the back. Again, the sleeves are just rectangles that are slightly larger than the front panels. I do very much like the white stripe on both of the sleeves.

As I have no idea how large a baby actually is, I sort of went off of patterns for this sweater. I just looked at different baby sweater patterns, and I looked at baby sweaters at the stores for size comparison. I think this sweater will fit a newborn up to about 6 months. Who knows, though? I know it will definitely fit a baby of some size :)

So, since this is actually my first FO post, I guess you may have figured out that I'm not a very precise knitter. Actually, I am when I'm following a pattern, but when I'm not, I just make sure the sizes are close. For an adult, this could turn into a catastrophe, but for baby knitting, I guess it is ok.

Next up on the needles is a baby hat to match this sweater. Then I will make booties also to match. This (along with a similar set in pink) has to be done by March, so I think I'm ok. Also, I would like to find some time to finish my first ever sock, which is currently sitting in my knitting basket with a bit of a heel flap just hanging there. I'm sure I'll work a little more on that tonight, and then I can post some pictures.

Speaking of my first ever sock, have you heard of the Yarn Harlot? Her book, Knitting Rules!, is amazing. I never had the urge to knit socks until I read it. I thought I was a bad knitter or something, but the Yarn Harlot made me see the light.

Speaking of Inspirational knitters, Glampyre knits maven Stefanie Japel is my hero. Her designs are so beautiful. She has a book coming out soon called "Fitted Knitting", and I think it will be a smash. It is available for pre-order on Amazon now.Kristy Knitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00706883904783950629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4509858118747977659.post-42871989461060925602007-04-14T13:54:00.000-07:002007-04-14T13:55:12.646-07:00Vox vs. Blogger?I started this blog, then I decided that I wanted to use Vox. You know, the ones with the beautiful pictures on the front and the big, glossy photos of all the projects inside? That is probably why, in the past year of browsing knitting books, I've passed up this book so many times.

Big Mistake.

Mc Phee, more affectionately known as "The Yarn Harlot", breaks down every standard knitting project -- from the basic scarf to the complicated sock -- in easy to understand language. I always thought that turning a heel for a sock was rocket science. The Yarn Harlot taught me that it merely requires some patience. There isn't much to say about this book other than if you are a knitter and you don't have this book, or if you are thinking about starting to knit: BUY IT!. I wish now that this had been the first knitting book that I bought.

I give this book: 4 balls of yarn.

-- KristyKristy Knitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00706883904783950629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4509858118747977659.post-60650551086297046112007-01-15T05:52:00.000-08:002007-01-15T06:12:08.241-08:00Welcome!I now have a knitting blog! This is new for me, and I'm not sure if I'm going to stick with knit/crochet projects, or if I'm going to talk about all of my crafty endeavors here. Probably the latter, but as I knit most often, I can still refer to this as a knitting blog!

About me: I'm a graduate student at Marshall University, where I'm working on my thesis in the field of developmental genetics. I live with my boyfriend and two psychotic cats, Posey and Penny. In my free time, I knit....and knit...and knit. I guess I would still be considered a "beginner", but I'm not afraid to try new stuff, so I guess I'll be more advanced in no time. I've been crocheting for years, but I just taught myself to knit about 1.5 years ago. I bought one of those silly "Knit This!" kits from Target (for a pair of legwarmers), which had a DVD included. I also bought one of those "Teach Yourself Knitting!" kits at A.C. Moore. After an hour or so of throwing my needles at the television, I went to Knitting Help, where the lovely Amy Finlay guided me towards becoming a knitter (her videos are awesome, if you are looking to learn). By the end of the day, I was knitting a very odd looking piece of material, and by the end of the week, I had conquered stockinette stitch! Now, I have conquered knitting in the round, DPN's, cables, shaping, and many other fun techniques.

I must say that knitting has replaced crochet for me. I don't crochet nearly as often as I did pre-knitting. I am, however, planning on crocheting granny squares to make an afghan. This is purely for stash-busting purposes. My yarn stash has grown to epic proportions. A lot of it is acrylic that I bought when I was learning, but some of it is very nice stuff. I'm picturing a huge blanket with squares and squares of different colors and textures. It will be funky and "eclectic", but that is me in a nutshell.

On the needles right now is a baby sweater for the bf's new baby cousin, who is due to pop out sometime in late March. I am also making a hat and booties to match. Meanwhile, I will also be making a similar set for my cousin's baby, who is also due in March. Luckily, one is a boy and one is a girl, so I got to buy blue and pink yarn! Pictures to follow in my next entry.

Well, that is me in a nutshell. I hope that I eventually get regular subscribers to this blog. Although I'm sure that is a bit of a way off, I think that as my skills increase, and I start designing my own projects (which is very soon, I think), my readership will grow.Kristy Knitshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00706883904783950629noreply@blogger.com0
